"...the proliferation of incorrect illustrations of the moon suggests that very few of us actually do." Considering the obnoxious spread of light pollution, and the ignorance to it by the general population - or perhaps, by those in power - it runs deeper than a lot of people simply not gazing at the moon enough. We're not taught about how to care for things that "seem fine" to us, or feel "out of our reach," so a lot of us just live day to day, while problems like these continue to stare us in the face; granted, most of us are just doing all we think we can, or just don't know how to help. I've been trying to fight this scourge, and every time I turn around, the problem gets worse...including near my location, where, not too far away, a pristine night sky once was. For generations, people would look into the night sky, and be inspired by it. I don't want to imagine a future where that's no longer the case, but it seems to be happening, and it's like screaming at a brick wall. I'm so tired.
@UrashimaO Says:
You are complaining about the moon's depiction in animated fairytales...
@kai_maceration Says:
responding to the first 2 corrections, I DON'T GIVE A SHIT IT LOOKS PRETTY!!😭
@penkatadrums Says:
I am 99.9% sure that which side of the moon is illuminated has nothing to do with where you are on the globe, and I think I can prove it 🤷♂️ moon craters rotate, yes, and so do the rings of Saturn, but not the part that is illuminated.
@Keara113 Says:
Don't care, looks good aesthetically.
@friedatheiling598 Says:
suggesting a firefly or space station etc could go in the space where stars would be blocked is actually So genuis - I've never seen that done! Hell, I'm gonna do that the next time I'm drawing a night scene!
@Cormorant42 Says:
Dude. You have no chill and don't understand *why* the moon's crescent is longer than half a circle; it's because cartoons don't want accuracy, they want to get the concept of the moon across as simply as possible. In the case of Scar, with the blood crescent behind him, the crescent is even exaggerated to give the scene an extra sense of danger.
@shamurevolt Says:
I was about to roll my eyes at the Lion King example. A stylized moon is no more or less weird than Hamlet with animals. But the more realistic version that you did is so much more magical! I immediately felt the scale of the story as soon as I remembered that it was on Earth, and not in a story book.
@alonjudkovsky Says:
So 2001: A Space Odyssey got it right in the "Dawn of man" sequence?
@SarahBell Says:
Oh dear. The illustrations aren’t mistakes. It’s art. At least you did admit this is pedantic.
@michaelcherokee8906 Says:
This was very interesting and informative.
@penkatadrums Says:
I always thought that the orientation of the moon depends on the time of night.
@DarnellTyrese Says:
I really hoped this video wouldn't turn out to be a pedantic correction video, listing painfully obvious mistakes.
@taeraezb1 Says:
0:46 LOONA MENTIONED
@京悪者 Says:
I've seen the moon in the afternoon a lot. Like, so much that there's literally no excuse for the moon to only be depicted at night lmfao
@blackbird797 Says:
2:40 I...don't know how i never knew that. I love science lol and I've wondered before what causes the moon to sometimes be visible during the day, but I never really thought about it that hard. This makes so much sense I'm almost ashamed I had to be told that. But then, ig ppl like me are why he felt the need to make this video 😂
@Taracinablue Says:
This is kinda blowing my mind. I knew about the star thing, but not why the moon is sometimes visible during the day, and that its orientation changes based on your place on earth.
@LieseFury Says:
holy shit man. who cares if art is perfectly representative of reality? maybe it's not a mistake, maybe you just don't understand why people do things.
@chriskaprys Says:
Apparently James Cameron replaced the stars in a later release of Titanic after it was pointed out that the original star scape was inaccurate.
This world wants reality, but doesn’t know which one it wants.
@gAMERwItChbAtHwATER Says:
Nobody was going to tell me the crescent moon becomes a cup near the equator until today?
@cosmic8437 Says:
Why do no equatorial flags have a cup like moon?
@watsonwrote Says:
2nd one is a pet peeve of mine
@pgoosendrool Says:
1:57 I think you are correct, except for when we bring in Treasure Planet. That moon you could see through it.
@vincenttavani6380 Says:
What about depicting the crescent moon with a night cap and sleepy eyes?
@leoluna2751 Says:
Brother has big brain but cant understand artistic intent xddd
@LunarcomplexMain Says:
kinda like how artists draw rubik's cubes incorrectly, when you could just look at a real one mixed up...
@mossydreamzinc Says:
i feel so vindicated by this video, i have been mad at people for not looking at the moon for years now
@The-Nerd-Empire Says:
So... where's #6?
@BenitoBeni1414 Says:
Conclusion: since one of the examples of badly portrayed moons had a sun with a face that means the sun has a face irl ‘cause he didn’t say anything about it
@cyaneddsworld-2870 Says:
2:35 I've never thought about this much but this explains why it felt so weird recently when I saw an almost full moon during the day because I don't usually see it like that at that time
(for explanation it was early in the morning)
@kahvipaputyyppi Says:
I never knew the moon would be "sideways" in equator. 😃 For some reason these things weren't taught in school, I also had to figure out myself that in the southern hemisphere the sun rises from right to left, opposite to our northern left to right.
@D1gitalOutcast Says:
I have a feeling this is going to be one of those corners of the internet that everyone gets dragged back to every now and then.
@Rot8erConeX Says:
1:47 I have a sibling who wants to make two games - one where the 100% ending is you accidentally blowing a hole in the moon, and then another in a completely different genre that still canonizes the previous game's 100% ending by explicitly showing a star within the dark part of the moon.
@nicherix Says:
One more popular mistake is making the Moon's dark side darker than surrounding sky.
@Australia-hehe Says:
Love the vid!
@thethiny Says:
This is the biggest "Uhm Akshually" video I've ever seen
@RubinRubinia Says:
Guess I've been _relatively_ good at drawing crescent moons then 🤔
I think I might've messed up on my most recent night time drawing though 💀
@Monthman11 Says:
Love how Assassination Classroom fixes all of these by just putting a massive hole in the moon
@Monthman11 Says:
sadly crescents that go past half-way look exceptionally badass
@Piemasteratron Says:
Love it!
@gusfring6887 Says:
i don't think anyone over the age of 10 thinks everything they see in cartoons is real. pointless video
@lonelyPorterCH Says:
I've seen the moon during daytime so many times, so nr 4 definitifely makes sense^^
@freddie-km5tz Says:
what also bugs me is when the moon angle doesn’t align with where the sun is—if it’s a half moon with the light side on the upper half, then the sun has to be above the moon in the sky so it can’t be nighttime
originally noticed it with over the garden wall but i’ll forgive it since the entire show is meant to be eerie creepy and liminal (hence why the moon phase doesn’t change at all throughout the show) so it honestly could’ve been a design feature to have the moon be incorrect
@jacoboes-l5u Says:
you just made some random kid get bullied in school for being overly pedantic about the moon
@sopse4816 Says:
so wait, if this whole video is edited to be negative colors but your hand is hand colored then what color did your hand have while filming?
@Ysbjorn07 Says:
Another guideline i have for moonphases is that the amount of moon that is lit up is basically the percentage of time the moon is visible in the night, so a full moon is visible 100% of the night time, while a half moon is 50% of the night time and 50% of the daytime
@syedmymoon4268 Says:
It's true that the moon should look like that but I don't think anyone cares. I mean it's fictional or hypothetical when it comes to movies or anything.
@Jijijijijij5 Says:
I think I misunderstood something. It sounds like he's saying that a crescent moon rises and sets at the same time as the sun, but that's obviously not right cause, ya know, we can see a crescent moon at night. Did I miss something?
@m0sifer Says:
My favorite thing that did the "stars in the moon" thing was treasure planet. Then it zooms in and its a space station the shape of a crescent moon. Great film
