Go to https://mondly.app/minutephysics to get 95.5% off lifetime access to 41 languages and start learning today. Also, a correction: the footnote text at 4:31 is WRONG. The whole point is that getting farther away and zooming in to keep the same frame size is super helpful. I apologize - that footnote slipped in late in the game and it missed double-checking.

I'm greatly distracted by this: " 1/60° " The way that's written, those aren't degrees, they are inverse degrees (1/° or degrees to the -1).
@chadportenga7858 Says:
It amazes me that some math nerd actually figured out an equation for the teleprompter's distance and size. Get a hobby!!! (I say that jokingly as I'm a bit of a nerd, too, and so are some of my hobbies.)
@ViamoX Says:
It's a dilemma, not a paradox!
@MrGustavier Says:
How does John Oliver do it ?
@ADBBuild Says:
Mike Rowe made a video years ago about how he records TV show narrations using an ear prompter. It's pretty wild to watch as he is really good at it. Edit: Found the video! https://youtu.be/J4LhdU3a1KM?si=PnsA_YerLtuCQ05c

Just use Descript
@aaaa-c7o2p Says:
We should have words that you zoom into instead of reading them straight on. Problem solved.
@BioniChaos Says:
Can you just make the text scroll on the prompter screen so you can keep looking at the same spot?
@Smudge4C Says:
1. I don't think this meets the definition of a paradox. There's nothing paradoxical here; it's simply a matter of finding the best balance between two competing aims. 2. There are other key factors that will help hide the apparency of teleprompter use, such as facial expressions, moving your head, and looking away from the teleprompter occasionally.
@StuffBudDuz Says:
I think you're missing the point. The main problem with a teleprompter is that you're reciting a script. It doesn't matter if you've memorized it, have an ear-prompter, or are reading it, the viewer will feel distanced from you. Rather, just talk to the viewer like you're talking to a friend. Even if the grammar isn't perfect and you sometimes have to use extra words to make your point, the viewer will be much more engaged with you. This is true whether you appear on camera or not. I can always tell when an off-camera content creator is reading from a script, even if they're doing it really well. And I hate it. I will ask YouTube to not recommend that channel.
@RawMeatEater57 Says:
Okay "purpose" right. Wtf does this matter, oh it doesn't
@andreac7a Says:
Why not make the text scroll horizontally at the right speed, so that your eyes don't really have to move at all?
@ericvanderaa Says:
Is the video sped up bij 10%?
@MovieDemon-666 Says:
Forget all that trouble, just edit your eye movement in after effect with some simple scripts. that makes your eyes stationary and natural.
@TheFlyingDogFish Says:
2:57 1/20 of a degree is more than 1/60 of a degree.
@Horinius Says:
Mondly isn't actually that great application to learn foreign languages. There are a lot of errors in their course. When I reported this problem to them, they told me to tell them the errors! Come on! They are supposed to teach people, not receive teaching from people!

As a former broadcast engineer, I was waiting to learn about a paradox I'd never encountered. Please check the definition of 'paradox'. Clickbait.

@Ray_of_Light62 Says:
I don't have a problem to appear in public or on camera with a bunch of papers in my hands, which I read from. It is more natural, and reassuring for those who are watching...
@Mr.PudgeMuffin Says:
Teleprompters are fine, dont care, irs the effin ring or halo lights that freak me out, they make peoples eyes look like android eyes and its way too uncanny for me to deal with.
@caligo5322 Says:
I used to watch this channel when I was a little kid, and it's kind of incredible that videos are still getting uploaded.
@Wattsepherson Says:
Great video. You can tell people are reading from a teleprompter as you can tell they're not being themselves. You can tell when somebody is speaking naturally from their own brain and reading something - they act differently and they become monotone.
@scottgray4623 Says:
1/60th of a degree... so 1 minute? MINUTE PHYSICS! 🤯
@pb5640 Says:
i’m sure there’s some sort of workaround or AI that can correct eye-movement on the video. if there’s not something like that, there will be soon
@PeterLGଈ Says:
There's another issue: if the viewer is (like me) watching a fixed point on the screen such as between your eyes, they will notice the movement of your eyes quite clearly no matter how small those movements are.
@RaptieFeathers Says:
People being pedantic and saying this isn't a paradox: There are many kinds of paradoxes, including the "veridical paradox." Which this is. Wikipedia has some really good articles on paradoxes if you're interested in learning more. :D Be careful about trying to be pedantic when you haven't done research.
@Daybreak_System Says:
The eyes moving isn't noticeable in any case for me, but you staring straight into the camera full time is extremely unsettling
@ExistenceUniversity Says:
What if we put the teleprompter behind the camera and made the camera transparent 😂
@ExistenceUniversity Says:
I'm upset that you repetitively said 1/60° and not a minute, then announce we are currently doing minute physics
@DarrenWhite-u2s Says:
3:04 Pretty sure you got your 1/20 and 1/60 fractions backward
@PhantasticPhysics Says:
I never realized there was so much physics involved in deciding the distance away from a teleprompter! Great job
@gordonbrinkmann Says:
Did I hear this correctly around 2:52 that you say, when the motion of the eyes is less than 1/60th of a degree, the viewers "probably" won't notice, and if it's less than 1/20th it is physically impossible? But 1/20th is three times wider than 1/60th, so if 1/20th is impossible to notice, than 1/60th is not "probably" unnoticed by viewers, but even more impossible physically.

Video idea: is it possible to capture a cloud? If you dragged a big open bag/ net behind your airplane could you kidnap a cloud?
@dannybean1497 Says:
one of the biggest factors, if not the biggest, regarding how easy it would be for a viewer to notice your eye movement relates to the quailtiy of the camara along with positioning, i might've simply missed it but im curious why it wasnt mentioned
@smb1397 Says:
hii, i have a question for you guys! what would happen if we somehow extracted ALL the coal in the earth right now, and burnt all of it up at once?
@tactileslut Says:
Anytime else remember Obama always switching between the prompters? You'd never guess from listening, but he'd look left for a few words, look right for a few words, then left to the same target as before.
@SDsc0rch Says:
plot twist... he was using a teleprompter the whole time! 4:23
@MrEazyE357 Says:
How is this a paradox?
@michaelburke4048 Says:
Another factor is going to be how animated you are while talking. We humans pick up on motion quite a bit, so, if you move your hands around a lot, or there are other distractions on the screen, the viewer's gaze is going to jump around a lot making it less likely they'll notice the relatively subtle motion of your irises. Make an equation for that one, science-boy! ;)
@rententee Says:
Wait... teleprompters have a camera in there??? I always thought it was just a regular screen that you put next to a camera
@geeksdo1tbetter Says:
1:17 ha! The eye moved up and down, instead of side to side
@MrSaemichlaus Says:
Aren't there teleprompters that listen to your speaking and automatically scroll the text you're about to read horizontally into view to keep your eyes centered on a narrower focus area?
@rajbhai-tp7cf Says:
I don't mind people reading off a teleprompter, and it doesn't even bother me if I can track the eyes moving. What bothers me most are the unnatural head movements done to hide that they're reading from a teleprompter.
@ethribin4188 Says:
Easiest solution. Just make the words bigger and skip through faster
