Turning farthest-from-anything into a clean geometric optimization on a sphere was the reveal that landed. Everyday remoteness suddenly looked like a constraint problem instead of a travel boast.
@3motionaldamage_67 Says:
No it’s 12,756
@taifgamil4076 Says:
Long story short it’s about the radius of the earth not the travel distance
@intheshell35ify Says:
Eat the cat. Save the walk.
@EchosOfStars Says:
Ah… I finally found my would-have-been hate math 😓…
Maybe it’ll encourage my kids to give up hatred 🤷♂️… but that’s assuming they had a more… aggressive childhood than I did 😐.
@DaybreakSystem Says:
that is brutally obvious, I was expecting some interesting things and details I didn't know about, which is what I usually get from these videos
@naufalaushaf4784 Says:
There is such a thing as Great Circle Distance tho, the shortest distance you need to travel between two points on the surface of Earth, and that max out at around 20,000 km.
@dust.collection Says:
not the diameter cuz tha earth aint a perfect circle !
@rajK29_ Says:
Ok if it is the "distance limit" and not the "displacement limit" I dare anyone and everyone to reach that cat by traveling that 12,750km instead of 20,000km
@SerunaXI Says:
Are they training AI to mimic XKCD now?
@atticuswalker8970 Says:
t' = t0 × (ρ_vac/ρ) × 1.00147 × (S/ΔS)²
@davidb4509 Says:
This is great. I was just teaching my son about diameter (10yo) and was able to show this to him. I think pretty much understood anyway, but the cat part made it more fun. 🙂
@mark-ish Says:
They belong to different categories: a practical/epistemic limitation (distance/horizon) versus an intrinsic geometric property (curvature/flatness).
Conflating them risks mistaking observational limits for ontological claims (e.g., “we see flat locally, so space is flat everywhere”).
@Zarir0 Says:
But then go 20k more to pet the cat
@Tmanstomp100 Says:
I have never seen any proof that the earth isn’t flat. The most they have is videos with a fish eye camera. Prove it 😅
@Cassius-it7wf Says:
What if I jump? Then what?
@Masqueey Says:
Problem is that those pesky astronauts in the ISS will always only be a few hundred kilometers above you 😭
@KM-rh4zl Says:
So you’re telling me if I walk 500 miles and then I walk 500 more, I wouldn’t be the man that walked 1000 miles just to fall down at your door?
@YodaWhat Says:
Why do you want me to walk sideways along the edge of Pizza Earth? 😅
@tellur808 Says:
Follow up question: what are the two specific points furthest apart on earth? Like someone pointed out the furthest from the center of the earth is some mountain in Ecuador, but if on the other side is a deep sea trench it cancels out.
I'm thinking of the set of antipodes whoes sum of distance to the center of the earth is maximised.
@ghostguy7 Says:
Your poor cat! I will rescue them!
@SpiritOfTheMist Says:
That's relative. If you speak from an euclidian perspective, yes you are right, but from a curved space perspective that would be still 20.000km and the farthest could be also the closest 39.999,99999 km away.
@x42069x Says:
Just wait until u find out abt circumfrence loll
@poduck2 Says:
I don't know the distance, but the earth isn't a perfect sphere. Is 12,750 actually the widest the earth gets, is it an average, or is it something else?
@JeremyCoatney Says:
So you're saying I'm at most 12,750km away from being able to pet your cat 🤔
@Finnsel Says:
🎵 And I would walk 10 000 kilometers, and I would walk 10 000 more, just to be the man who walked 12 750 kilometers to pet your cat 🎵
@ohmegatronn Says:
Only if the earth were a sphere.
@Aelfraed26 Says:
"Though we normally call it the diameter of the earth"
No shit. That's basic geometry. Pretty pointless short.
@JerwinPrasad Says:
Like we don't know about displacement
@OrionKaelin Says:
I know the Earth has some variance in its diameter based on the slight squash at the equator, but also with mountains and stuff. So I wonder what two points on the actual Earth would be the absolute farthest from eachother taking all these factors into account?
@sk8erdude88 Says:
I could be in a jet/plane and be further awsy
@YamadaDesigns Says:
Flat earthers aren't going to like this video
@patrickkilduff5272 Says:
You are actually 5500 KM away from your cat. Since you walked 20k....you would pass the 12,750 max distance but then start walking towards your cat once you walked the radius of the Earth.
@foxm3319 Says:
If You walk 10.000 km away from your cat, and I walk 10.000km away from your cat, should be both 10.000km away from Your cat?
Also why Walk, I don't know you but for me 10.000 is a pretty long distance to walk with... Just saying...
@Allenrythe Says:
Having spent the better part of a decade working with GIS systems, I wish the Earth was flat. There's nothing worse than realizing 2 months into a project that someone picked the wrong planar projection for design and now every plan that's above a specific latitude has a -2ft drift when measuring horizontally.
@kipu44 Says:
I like the definition of diameter as the max distance.
@d.n.3652 Says:
What’s that distance in American?
@sircrackboi Says:
„Some random ass mounting on the equator is bigger than Mount Everest“ ass logic
@fischX Says:
Unsettling that I can't get further away from my ex ever 😂
@TheOtherSteel Says:
I want you to introduce us to your cat.
@AaronFresh09 Says:
The most trivial fact from minute physics
@EugeneChangEC Says:
But you didn’t answer the question of what two points on earth ARE the furthest away from each other (straight line through the earth, bulge and elevation included).
@jmpc4468 Says:
so about 3 chiles
@shalevforfor5550 Says:
Yes, but we calculate those km, by the walkable distance, we are not digging to get to the other side
@TooMuchThought Says:
But, if I would walk 500 miles and then I would walk 500 more?
@YorkyPudinz Says:
Are we talking pole to pole or each side of the equator...
@TheEllod Says:
Horrid explanation... That does not understand they two colliding notionsnof distances and lazily moves between the two is a lazy way. Thisnwill convince noone, and make peoplewho think about the earth as rphnd stupider.
@Scottage_Man Says:
But I would walk ten thousand ks
And I would walk ten thousand more
Just to be twelve thousand
seven hundred fifty ks
Away from your cat
@Everythingwillbefine-b3e Says:
Ok, but if you walk 10 000 km away from your cat, youre not really 10 000 km away from your cat, because there you took into consideration the curvature of earth.
