Specific Gravity

????

This physics video tutorial provides a basic introduction into specific gravity which is a ratio of the density of an object relative to the density of a fluid such as water. One thing that I came across, that might be of interest to some people is that the density of water changes with temperature. Not a significant change if we're talking about household applications of this principle but basically the density of water seems to be maximum at 4 degrees celsius or lower and then starts to decrease (at an increasing rate) as the temperature increases. As I was watching the video, I was wondering… the number that you get after dividing by 1 g/cm^3 (i.e. dividing by 1) is just the same number, so why wouldn’t you just use density in g/cm^3 to begin with? So I guess this has greater implications in industrial applications where you’re heating water to more extreme temperatures.

Why do we multiply when converting from g/cm^3 to kg/m^3 shouldn’t it be divided instead? I thought when you are converting from a smaller unit to a bigger unit you were supposed to divide. Edit: guys I understood it tysm.
