For a number of years I worked for a small aerospace firm that manufactured equipment which essentially depended on the earth being round to function properly.
The guys who actually assembled the equipment were smart, capable dudes, performing highly-skilled technical work. Most of em were older than I was, and they obviously knew what we were building. About half of them were flat earthers. I heard them talking about it with some regularity, and when I asked one of the younger guys if I'd heard right he jumped right into explaining to me all they'd been talking about since he started working with them.
A person who is motivated to be stupid cannot be convinced to stop by evidence. The same math they relied on every day to reliably perform extremely precise operations could be used to confirm that the earth was not flat. It wasn't that they had some cognitive impairment or simply wanted to confirm the truth with their own eyes. They were all Christian traditionalists and biblical literalists who had to hold in tension their motivated belief that the earth is flat with the fact that we were putting cameras on planes that had to stay level no matter the plane's position relative to the earth.
They believe in flat earth not because they don't believe in math, but because their identities were (and maybe still are) tied up in a need to believe that the earth is flat because that comported with their literal interpretation of scripture. If the earth is round, then their reading of the bible is flawed, and surely the bible is inerrant.
I mean, just look at the comments on this or any other video providing evidence of the shape of the earth. You don't get people arguing with the math on its own merits, they just wave it off as being flawed or "manipulated." For a while arguing about different common experiments was a common approach, but that is a minority of responses, holdovers still trying to cast doubt on pretty ironclad physics. Nah, they just call math demonic now. They just go "the bible says its flat." It's either "Satan is deceiving you" or "nuh uh math is a lie." These aren't counter-arguments, it's evangelism and self-soothing.
Most flerfers aren't scientifically skeptical because they've not been provided with compelling evidence, rather they have to battle every day to transmute compelling evidence into a conspiracy masking the truth. You don't spend this much energy defending an obviously stupid, indefensible position that is trivially dismantled by any of a hundred repeatable experiments unless you HAVE to believe that stupid thing. If some stupid bullshit is a load-bearing belief for something more important to you, you'll throw out as much science, institutional trust, common sense, and even your own integrity as you need to in order to hold fast to it.

You can zoom in on ships that seem to disappear. You can only see so far. The sun still sets relative to where you are. At my house from east to west I can see maybe 20 miles tops. The sun at 3000 miles away wouldn't change in size that one could notice in that short of a distance.
