8 | Literary Analysis: 'Escritores contemporáneos de Estados Unidos y España' | AP Spanish Lit
In this AP Daily: Live Review session for AP Spanish Literature and Culture, we will explore select literature from the second half of the twentieth century from Spain and the U.S. We will explore the development of themes in La noche buena such as 'las relaciones familiares' and 'la marginacion y la asimilación'. We will also review the skills students need in order to explain the development of a theme within a text while providing textual examples to support their response. Next, we will discuss Y no se lo tragó la tierra and features of Spanish literature from the U.S. while focusing on the use of real-world language and the representation of the immigrant experience. Emphasis will be placed on the skills necessary to compare the development of a theme in a text with a work from the visual arts in connection to a literary period, movement, genre or technique. We will transition to Mi Caballo Mago and explore how to analyze the representation of the literary period, movement, genre, or technique of a text. We will focus on the characteristics of poetry in prose found in the work and explore how to analyze the social-cultural context of rural New Mexico in the 20th century while discussing the common literary devices employed in poetry in prose. Finally, we will engage in an analysis of 'Como la vida misma' focusing on the development of the theme of 'el individuo en su entorno' and exploring how elements of interior monologue and second person narration influence the development of the theme. The analysis will be structured to help students prepare for Free - Response Question 4: Text Comparison.
