Culturally responsive education begins with teacher and leader preparation and continues with ongoing training and development. However, many educators are not supported by culturally responsive evaluation systems. In order to support educators, the Santa Fe Indian School (SFIS) and REL Southwest developed an educator evaluation system for the school, specifically aligned to the context of the New Mexico tribes and pueblos served by the school.
This REL Southwest webinar, 'Developing Culturally Responsive Educators: Teacher Preparation, Job-Embedded Support, and Professional Educator Growth Systems for Schools Serving Indigenous Population,' was recorded on May 9, 2023. The webinar archive includes two videos: (1) an introduction to the webinar by Janice Keizer, and an overview of the SFIS educator evaluation system with Dr. Anya Dozier Enos; and (2) a panel discussion with Dr. Glenabah Martinez (Taos Pueblo/Diné), Dr. Timothy Begaye (Diné), and Dr. Mark Ericson.
In Video 2, Drs. Martinez, Begaye and Ericson discuss preparing preservice teachers for culturally responsive teaching, the importance of ongoing professional development for educators, and implementing the culturally responsive educator growth and evaluation system. Ms. Keizer facilitates a question-and-answer session.
