"...the proliferation of incorrect illustrations of the moon suggests that very few of us actually do." Considering the obnoxious spread of light pollution, and the ignorance to it by the general population - or perhaps, by those in power - it runs deeper than a lot of people simply not gazing at the moon enough. We're not taught about how to care for things that "seem fine" to us, or feel "out of our reach," so a lot of us just live day to day, while problems like these continue to stare us in the face; granted, most of us are just doing all we think we can, or just don't know how to help. I've been trying to fight this scourge, and every time I turn around, the problem gets worse...including near my location, where, not too far away, a pristine night sky once was. For generations, people would look into the night sky, and be inspired by it. I don't want to imagine a future where that's no longer the case, but it seems to be happening, and it's like screaming at a brick wall. I'm so tired.

I am 99.9% sure that which side of the moon is illuminated has nothing to do with where you are on the globe, and I think I can prove it š¤·āāļø moon craters rotate, yes, and so do the rings of Saturn, but not the part that is illuminated.

suggesting a firefly or space station etc could go in the space where stars would be blocked is actually So genuis - I've never seen that done! Hell, I'm gonna do that the next time I'm drawing a night scene!

<<@Cormorant42
says :
Dude. You have no chill and don't understand *why* the moon's crescent is longer than half a circle; it's because cartoons don't want accuracy, they want to get the concept of the moon across as simply as possible. In the case of Scar, with the blood crescent behind him, the crescent is even exaggerated to give the scene an extra sense of danger.

I was about to roll my eyes at the Lion King example. A stylized moon is no more or less weird than Hamlet with animals. But the more realistic version that you did is so much more magical! I immediately felt the scale of the story as soon as I remembered that it was on Earth, and not in a story book.

2:40 I...don't know how i never knew that. I love science lol and I've wondered before what causes the moon to sometimes be visible during the day, but I never really thought about it that hard. This is kinda blowing my mind. I knew about the star thing, but not why the moon is sometimes visible during the day, and that its orientation changes based on your place on earth.

I never knew the moon would be "sideways" in equator. š For some reason these things weren't taught in school, I also had to figure out myself that in the southern hemisphere the sun rises from right to left, opposite to our northern left to right.

1:47 I have a sibling who wants to make two games - one where the 100% ending is you accidentally blowing a hole in the moon, and then another in a completely different genre that still canonizes the previous game's 100% ending by explicitly showing a star within the dark part of the moon.

what also bugs me is when the moon angle doesnāt align with where the sun isāif itās a half moon with the light side on the upper half, then the sun has to be above the moon in the sky so it canāt be nighttime originally noticed it with over the garden wall but iāll forgive it since the entire show is meant to be eerie creepy and liminal (hence why the moon phase doesnāt change at all throughout the show) so it honestly couldāve been a design feature to have the moon be incorrect

Another guideline i have for moonphases is that the amount of moon that is lit up is basically the percentage of time the moon is visible in the night, so a full moon is visible 100% of the night time, while a half moon is 50% of the night time and 50% of the daytime
