I know this is an old post, but I'm going to throw this out there and see if it gets read. :-) This discussion comes the closest I've seen to addressing a question I have about a real-life scenario. What is the type of physics involved in determining what firearm load has the potential to knock a steel plate over with greater authority? And how do we calculate that potential? Let's take a simple example: We have a 9mm handgun. We can either shoot a 115 grain projectile at 1,180fps or a 147 grain at 1,000fps. Which one will be the most likely to knock over the plate, and why? Do we calculate for (Kinetic) Energy (KE=0.5 X mv(squared))? Momentum (P=mv)? Force (F=ma)? Other? Why and How? In the formula in this video, the projectile becomes imbedded in the "block". In the shooting game that precipitated my question, the "block" is a steel plate. The bullet is either cast from a lead alloy, made with a lead core surrounded by a gilding metal jacket or comprised of some other frangible material. The point being that the "block" will not deform, but the bullet most certainly will. It will probably disintegrate on impact with the steel plate, and the resulting myriad of differently-sized bullet pieces will disperse from the face of the plate in various directions and at various speeds. Neither the weight, direction of travel or velocity of the individual pieces can be known. The general perception is that, in our example, the heavier, but slower, bullet will "hit harder"; and therefore be more liable to knock the plate over than the faster, but lighter, bullet. But is that right? And why? Or why not?

The ballistic pendulum was one of those physics concepts that seemed impossible to wrap my head around at first. I tried all kinds of study resources, and eventually, some platforms with AI-based tools like SolutionInn really helped the ideas sink in. For anyone else feeling like this topic is overwhelming, donβt worry; extra resources can make a huge difference.

Why is the formula for the vertical displacement thought? What about if you wanted to figure the horizontal displacement? Asking because the only thing in said formula that seems to relate to height is the gravitational constant, so it's not like it'd be too intuitive to figure out (or at least for me it isn't, maybe some brighter individuals could do it).
