I have only one question where I can not wrap my mind. appreciate your help. Why is "potential energy" always thought of as position above earths surface (or a massive object with gravity eg mars)? Can't there be other types of "potential energy" that is not necessarily dependent on gravity such as energy stored in the elasticity of an object? Example blowing up a balloon, will cause the air to want to escape and equalize to the atmospheric pressure. If the energy stored in the elasticity is not "potential energy" what would you call it?
